The account list problem
Most reps get a list of target accounts and start a cold sequence on all of them uniformly. But some of those accounts almost certainly have an existing connection somewhere — a rep's own network, a teammate's, or a champion from a previous deal — and treating every account identically wastes that advantage.
The pre-outbound network check
Before any account enters a cold sequence, run one question against your combined team network: "does anyone on our team already know someone at this account?" This takes minutes when your network is searchable, and it changes the entire first-touch strategy for any account where the answer is yes.
When a warm path exists, the play changes from a cold email sequence to a warm-intro request. That matters because cold email starts low (a 1.5% median reply rate across 56,614 campaigns), while 61% of B2B buyers say a pre-existing relationship makes them more likely to connect with a seller.
Where the highest-leverage connections hide
- Former colleagues. People you worked with directly are usually the strongest source of warm intros into their current company. Even mentioning a shared former employer helps: LinkedIn found it makes a recruiter’s InMail 27% more likely to get a response.
- Past customers and champions. Someone who bought from you before and moved companies is one of the best-qualified intros available — they already know your product works.
- Teammates' networks. A rep's individual network is a fraction of the team's combined network. Pooling it (with permission) widens warm-path coverage a lot. LinkedIn’s data showed prospects were 46% more likely to accept an InMail when they were connected to someone at the sender’s company.
Timing matters as much as the connection itself
A connection who just changed jobs into a target account is often more open to conversations early on, while they're still building their internal network and revisiting tools. LinkedIn treats it as a signal too: Sales Navigator has a “Changed jobs in last 90 days” filter. Job-change alerts on your existing connections turn this into a proactive signal instead of something you notice by accident.
Making this repeatable
The reps who do this consistently aren't manually checking LinkedIn for every account — they run the check as a standing query. People by Sniff lets you ask "who in my network works at [account]" for any account on your list in seconds, so the pre-outbound check becomes a default step instead of an occasional one.
